Workers’ Compensation Claims Specialist

The Texas Municipal League Intergovernmental Risk Pool, a public entity risk pool providing property, liability and workers’ compensation coverages to more than 2,800 local governments in Texas, is seeking a Workers’ Compensation Claims Specialist working out of our main office located in Austin, Texas.

Functional Overview

The Workers’ Compensation Claims Specialist performs specialized duties in the investigation of workers’ compensation claims. Major components of this position include:

  • Investigates assigned workers’ compensation claims to determine compensability; interviews members, claimants, and witnesses; reviews medical reports, personnel records, maintenance reports, police reports, etc.
  • Reviews and verifies weekly indemnity benefits.
  • Reviews and processes incoming mail relevant to assigned cases.
  • Maintains case files.
  • Prepares cases for the dispute resolution process; attend dockets and court hearings to assist in the resolution of cases.
  • Meets with members to provide workers’ compensation training and to discuss case strategies.
  • Conducts periodic activity checks on injured workers to ensure compliance with doctor’s orders, medical instructions, and the Texas Labor Code.
  • Files dispute documents within statutory deadlines.
  • Performs related duties.

Knowledge/Experience Required

The successful candidate will have knowledge of workers’ compensation rules and regulations, Texas Labor Code, medical terminology, and demonstrated proficiency in workers’ compensation investigation principles and guidelines. Working independently with minimal supervision, the Workers’ Compensation Claims Specialist have skills in oral and written communication, interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public, decision making and problem solving. The ability to use a variety of common computer applications as well learning Pool specific applications is required. A valid Texas driver’s license is required as is a Texas Department of Insurance Worker’s Compensation Adjuster License (or the ability to readily obtain such licenses).

Education

The successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in business, insurance, or closely related field plus one to two years’ of experience in adjusting workers’ compensation claims in Texas, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Starting salary is dependent upon qualifications. Position carries a complete benefits package, including Medical, Dental, & Vision Insurance; participation in the Texas Municipal Retirement System and a 457 Deferred Compensation with a Roth option. Claims Assistant

The Texas Municipal League Intergovernmental Risk Pool, a public entity risk pool providing property, liability, and workers’ compensation coverages to more than 2,800 local governments in Texas, is seeking a Claims Assistant working in our Liability/Property Claims Department out of our main office located in Austin, Texas.

This position performs administrative and customer service duties related to the processing of member claims.

Principal Duties Include:

  • Answers telephone calls; gathers preliminary claims information; routes to appropriate adjusters.
  • Reviews faxes and makes calls to obtain additional information as needed to complete claim entry.
  • Opens, scans, and attaches email and faxes to appropriate files.
  • Receives and signs for packages; routes checks to accounting personnel.
  • Scans, separates, and attaches correspondence to appropriate files.
  • Generates correspondence as requested.
  • Prepares and processes outgoing mail and other shipments, including certified mail.
  • Processes independent adjuster invoices.
  • Processes new and existing EEOC and lawsuit claims.
  • Faxes or emails new claim assignments to independent adjusters.
  • Aids department personnel in the resolution of equipment and software problems.
  • Maintains office supply inventory.
  • Performs related duties.

Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of customer service principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of modern office principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Knowledge of coverage for each member
  • Skill in the maintenance of files and records.
  • Skill in the use of office equipment.

Education and Experience:

Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.

Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

Product Analyst

The Texas Municipal League Intergovernmental Risk Pool, a public entity risk pool providing property, liability and workers’ compensation coverages to more than 2,700 local governments in Texas, is seeking a Product Analyst in the Office of Project Management.

Functional Overview

The Product Analyst position provides technical input and support for development and maintenance of the organization’s Policy Center, Billing Center and Smart Communications applications to support underwriting business functions including rating, workflow, processes and functional requirements, and system integrations. This position is weighted heavily on the technical side and as a result requires deep technical and architectural knowledge of the Guidewire suite.

Responsibilities:

  • Works collaboratively with individuals and teams across the organization to develop strategies and initiatives as relates to system development and maintenance.
  • Responsible for analyzing impacts of proposed system development on overall system workflow and standard industry practices. Identifies risks in business requirements and provides alternative solutions where appropriate.
  • Ensures system integrations and downstream impacts are anticipated, evaluated, and tested.
  • Participates in evaluating and recommending system configuration based on out of the box functionality and best practices.
  • Develops requirements for complex software development initiatives.
  • Assists with functional testing of system enhancements or changes to existing system functionality prior to implementation, including rating engine impact of rate and routine adjustments.
  • Works with training team to provide information and perform as a resource for downstream impact and guidelines for end users.

Knowledge/Experience Required

  • Knowledge of the insurance industry is preferred, particularly in commercial lines.
  • 5+ years experience as Product or Systems Analyst in an Agile environment.
  • 5+ years experience working as a developer or directly with developers on the Guidewire suite of products. Direct development experience is preferred.
  • Business, technical and architectural knowledge of the Guidewire suite of applications including Policy Center, Billing Center, Smart Communications, Claim Center and Contact Manager.
  • Demonstrable working knowledge of Gosu scripting and the Java virtual machine (JVM).
  • Having a working knowledge of relational databases, preferably MS SQL Server.
  • Ability to understand complex transactional processing standards required for premium allocation to support statistical and financial reporting.
  • Knowledge of software development lifecycles.
  • Knowledge of requirement and specification development principles.
  • Knowledge of software testing methodologies.

Education

The successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in business, IT, insurance, management information systems or closely related field plus one to two years’ of Business Analysis experience, or

Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
